Do you suffer from a malocclusion? A malocclusion is an alignment issue with your teeth or jaw where they do not sit or fit right. Oftentimes, malocclusions can be fixed with orthodontic treatments and therapies designed to straighten smiles and improve oral health.

Not all malocclusions are the same. There are many different types and classifications of each. Many malocclusions affect our incisors, which are the teeth in the fronts of our mouth. Overbites, deep bites, underbites, open bites, and misplaced midlines all occur with ailments related to our incisors. Overbites occur when the upper incisors stick out past the lower incisors. Conversely, underbites occur when the lower incisors stick out past the upper incisors. Severe forms of overbites are called deep bites, also known as closed bites. When the incisors fail to line up and connect when the jaw is closed, this is called an open bite. If they are not correctly aligned, a misplaced midline occurs.

Another type of malocclusion is a transposition malocclusion. When teeth erupt above the gum line, they have a specific place where they belong. Sometimes they may not arrive in the proper place, or switch spots with other teeth, resulting in the malocclusion. This can also be the cause of rotation malocclusions and spacing issues such as overcrowded teeth, or large and unevenly spaced gaps between teeth.
