While you’re wearing braces, it’s important to keep your teeth clean and practice good brushing habits. Otherwise you may end up with cavities or discoloration around where the braces are bonded to the teeth. That’s why your oral hygiene routine is key.

If you are struggling to clean around your braces hardware, there are special tools that can help. Brushing your teeth twice a day is essential for removing plaque and food material from your mouth and braces hardware. You can use an interdental brush with a small tapered head to clean hard to reach places between your teeth and the brackets and wires. They are especially helpful for getting small food particles out of bands and spacers.

Braces wires and other components can occasionally make it difficult to floss between your teeth and gums. A simple floss threader can insert a strand of waxed dental floss into these places. An oral irrigator like Waterpik® creates a concentrated stream of water. This can help loosen food particles and cleanse the crevices between your teeth.
