While you’re aligning your smile with braces, you might run into an orthodontic emergency. This isn’t anything to be too worried about, and it’s a typical part of the orthodontic journey. Sometimes accidents happen and complications occur. When you experience an orthodontic emergency, it’s best to stay calm and keep a cool head. Our orthodontist, Dr. Jensen, is happy to give you some tips on how to handle the situation.

-If you have broken or lost an appliance: It’s best to call our office and schedule an appointment. If you have an appointment coming up, it’s helpful to call our team and explain the situation beforehand.

-If you have a loose bracket or band: Call our office as soon as possible because the appliance might need to be refitted. It’s best to leave the appliance alone, but, if you have to, you can slide the bracket off at night or over the weekend to make the appliance more comfortable.

-If you have poking wires or wire irritations: Move the wire back into place with a pencil eraser or cotton swab. If you can’t move the wire, you can cover the irritating end with orthodontic wax to provide comfort. If the wire is still bothering you, you can clip it with sterile fingernail clippers. Make sure to call our office to schedule an appointment.

-If you lose a separator: Don’t worry too much about the separator. Just call our office to see if it needs to be replaced.

-If you have discomfort with your appliance: It’s normal to feel discomfort or soreness after your adjustment appointments. To find the comfort you desire, you can take over-the-counter pain medication or you can use a heating pad or warm washcloth to soothe the jaws.
